DAG Hijab Fashion Week Review!

Salaam my lovelies,

Hope that you all are well on this rather chilly Monday in Cape Town,

I know many of you are wondering why I did not post an article in the last 4 weeks, but rest assured, there was some method to my madness. For the past two weeks I have had the greatest priviledge to attend the DAG Hijab Fashion Week 2014 and let me tell you, it was AMAZING!

As mentioned in my previous article, the DAG Hijab Fashion Week promised to bring us a collaboration between interior design & fashion, and oh boy! Did it hit the right key in that regard.

Originally I intended to do the article in 2 separate posts, however, I felt it best for me to rather give you all, my amazing readers, a jam-packed post that will leave you running to these designers and placing orders faster than the rain is pouring outside, hehe…

The first part of the DAG Hijab Fashion Week took place on the 01 June 2014 at the premises of DAG Furniture in Woodstock. I decided to take my little sister along with for the experience as she had never been to a Hijab Fashion Week before. So off we went all dressed up, me donning the newest addition to my wardrobe, a navy Europa Design Emporium tunic worn with a black trench coat, ribbed leggings & a gold cheetah print scarf to finish off the look.

The venue was breath-taking, we were greeted by amazing rails of fashion with Rushdiyah Narker of Wimsy, coyly displaying her amazing hand-made jewellery at back. Straying from a conventional fashion show, the guests were allowed to be seated on all the furniture that DAG Furnitures had to offer, with every piece available for sale, I personally had my eye on the boudoir type dividers. Just stunning!

The show was hosted by Modest Muse’s very own editor, Mushra Hartley, all glammed up in red & leather, she started the show on the right footing with an opening dua and then it was all fashion ahead!

Hitting the runway first was Europa Design Emporium, with some of the designers modelling the ramp themselves! Showcasing a few pieces that we saw at their previous fashion show but all done with a different twist, proving the versatility of every garment to fit the wearer beautifully. After their collection made its showcase, the ladies did one final walk down the runway, all giggles and fun. J

Second to hit the runway was Precious Rose, a designer that I was quite unfamiliar with up until then, Wardah Daniels brought a sense of elegance to the younger generation, by toying with fabrics and colours, to bring together a rather eclectic collection that worked so well. Every outfit had a sense of movement to it, making them even more spectacular to stare at as they walked down the runway.

GKD hit us up next, sister to Ms Abashiya herself of Fabulous in Hijab, Gadija Khan proved that fashion definitely runs in their blood. *well done to your mom ladies!* Showing a more relaxed side to fashion, her designs were truly made for all ages, sporting some fun colours and collars.

Last up, we had Fabulous in Hijab, Abashiya Daniels looking oh so stunning in an amazing dress that can only be described as the “hijabified” version of the LBD. Truth be told, you need to be as confident as Abashiya herself to pull off such an amazing look.

Starting her collection with looks for tweens, Fabulous in Hijab showcased bold colours with straight lines to give off a more polished yet vibrant outfit. The designs for the younger ladies comprised of flowing fabrics …………………

The Eid collections ended off with a show-stopper from Fabulous in Hijab, a gold dress that was daring in its beauty, to end off the day’s event. Throughout the fashion show, many of the guests won some amazing prizes with the biggest prizes being sponsored by………. After the show I also got to meet with the amazing Nuhaa Dalwai of ‘Frocking Cotton’, definitely check out her blog as this lady seriously knows her stuff when it comes to looking amazing always!

We set off with an amazing goodie bag, comprising of a Glamour magazine, Home and something magazine, business cards of all the designers and a wimsy pin!!  Tired of the days excitement, we set home abuzz with new excitement for the second part of the DAG Hijab Fashion Week.

*As a bit of a side note, I need to add a revelation that my sister made to me at the show. It being her very first modest fashion event, she was astounded at how many young women wore the hijab so proudly and that the fashion show had modern music playing, lol. It may sound silly, but being her eldest sister, she obviously thinks I’m “old-fashioned”, so this event really opened her eyes to how amazing it is to be modest and still fashionable at the same time. So to every young lady who attended the event & strutted with confidence down the runway, I whole heartedly thank you!

Slightly oversleeping for Part 2 of the DAG Hijab Fashion Week, I decided for a more boho chic look, wearing a black Europa Design Emporium skirt, white top, cream baggy cardigan & pastel mint scarf to finish my look with gold accessories, a more relaxed look was definitely on the cards.

On arrival I managed to get the lovely Ganiefa of Europa Design Emporium without her sister designers, as a VIP guest at the event. Once we got our seats we were joined by the very talented Fatima Wise of memrsme who looked amazing all in black with a matching mint turban, soon the familiar faces of Sisters in Hijab joined us & it was a full ride of giggles thereon.

I managed to catch some of the designers in the audience who were spectators for this part of the event, namely ………. Of the Walk-In Closet and Gadija Khan of GKD.  All were very relaxed and enjoying the event as it was their chance to just relax & enjoy the show.

The show was again hosted by the beautiful Mushra Hartley of Modest Muse, this time in a black outfit with the most amazing pair of turquoise boots and matching turban. She also gave out prizes throughout, however, it seemed as if though many of the ladies were mighty shy to collect their prizes as it took quite a while to find winners.

Starting off the show was Mariam Solomons, petite in stature, her designs proved that she was no lil miss daisy. Aimed at the young generation, her designs were fun and definitely catered to women of every size.

Next we had MSquared with her fun array of fabrics & designs that bring out the more playful side in all of us.

Ragmah Taliep went all vintage with pieces that had me going, “I want that, and that and that” throughout the entirety of her line. Having a great love for vintage pieces, I truly loved the classical nuance of vintage tied into the modern design.

Ms Abashiya  from Fabulous in Hijab showcased a few pieces that we’ve seen on the runway at the previous Hijab Week with a few all new exclusive pieces to broaden the range.

Dressed in a stunning crop dress, it is always amazing to see the way that Fabulous in Hijab is able to hijabify almost any outfit.

Ending a lot sooner than anticipated, think we were having too much fun hehe…, I was able to catch up with my fellow bloggers, designers and guests who attended the show. I must say, it is always awe-inspiring to chat to these ladies as the conversations are full of aspirations and plans to broaden our platform of modest fashion in Cape Town to the main stream.
